ANKARA-(15.10.2018) - The Minister of Interior Mr. Süleyman Soylu received the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos and his accompanying delegation at his office. Mr. Soylu said that Turkey fulfilled unconditionally all its duties towards all over the world and humanity.
As of October, this year, the Minister Mr. Soylu said that totally 205 thousand irregular migrants had been captured and the most of the irregular migrants were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Iraq.
Mr. Soylu stated that Turkey displayed successful performance about managing the migration policy, when Turkey’s performance on migration evaluated every 100 migrants that passing to Greece but 10 of them can be captured, now this rate reached to 54% with joint operation.
Mr. Soylu noted that:
“Even if Turkey obey to 18 March memorandum with great effort, unfortunately Greece don’t obey. This figure is a very ridiculous figure in 2018, 2,540 thousand people in 2.5 years, 5 people after the 18 March memorandum in 2018 “he said.
Mr. Soylu said that due to the high capacity working 10 boats are almost cannot working and they made fourfold efforts to combat irregular migration, the EU supported with 6 boat and will give support with 9 boats. Turkey is also on the upper level of the national budget that contribute to this issue, and finally the 105 boat coordinated and the Minister stated that they faced with a serious wave of migration from Afghanistan. Last year the 45 thousand Afghan were arrested in Turkey, Mr. Soylu said that this figure exceeds 81 thousand this year by the end of this year the number will reach 100 thousand.
Mr. Soylu said that they took precaution against the irregular migration in line of Greece and Bulgaria.
There are inadequacies of the Greece. In fact, they know their inadequacies themselves. However, in a meaningless way, they prefer to conflict with Turkey, rather than expressing these inadequacies in the presence of EU. As far as I understand, unfortunately Greece, while needing to thank to Turkey for these important efforts, criticizes Turkey's struggle to migration due to some economic concerns at some platforms. We do not find this correct and moral in terms of our struggle. Because the numbers are obvious. Last year, approximately 75.000 irregular immigration has reached to 205.000 now. There is an increase of 78 % in our eastern regions and a 70 % increase in our western regions. Turkey reveals the role of history in a very friendly manner.
The Minister Soylu expressed his deep sorrow for the death of 22 refugees in a traffic accident that occurred in Izmir yesterday.
- "Turkey keeps her promises"
The EU Commissioner for Immigration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, stated that there had been a very efficient cooperation between the Turkish Coast Guard units and the Greek Coast Guard on irregular immigration issues and congratulated the Turkish Coast Guard Command for their successful operations
Avramopulos stated that they made a big distance in struggling against irregular migration and compared to the previous 2 years they came to a very different point. Avramopoulos also said that the agreement signed between Turkey and EU on 18 March 2016 should continue.
Avramopoulos stressed the need of developing the partnership between Turkey and Greece. From the beginning of his assignment as an EU commissioner, Avramopulos mentioned that he gave a big importance to honesty and said “There is no point for us to blame each other’’. He kept his words as following:
"Turkey keeps its promises and fulfil their obligations. On behalf of the EU, I would like to say; we also would like to fulfil all of our promises. Regarding to the Turkey’s hardly difficult humanitarian mission, we will continue our political, operational and financial support in any case. As a part of my job I also meet with your colleagues in Greece. What is our common ground? Everybody would like to have further cooperation and would like to conduct more work towards to the results. Therefore, I recommend to all parts to continue this cooperation, to maintain their bilateral relations and to increase their contacts."
Stating that they are ready to organize the relations of Turkey with her neighbours, Avramopulos said “Turkey is currently hosting 3.5 million refugees of Syrian origin. Above all the things, this must be appreciated.’’
Avramopulos indicated that Turkey keeps walking in the EU way and he will be happy to see that Avramopoulos, reminding that visa liberalisation is in his responsibility, he has congratulated Turkey to fulfil the most of the criteria. Upon the speech of Avramopoulos saying that there are 7 criteria left for the visa liberalisation, The Minister of Interior Mr. Süleyman Soylu indicated that there are 5 criteria left.
While continuing his speech, Avramopoulos as the member of the commission expressed that he would only able to point out his views in the presence of EU, and he would be happy to see Turkey as a member state of EU.
